Debbie Souza-Pappas

Director and founder of Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation. Debbie started as a MLT (medical laboratory technician). She spent all of her life in that field until moving to Price in 1994. She worked at several laboratories in the Salt Lake area. Her love of animals came from her grandmother, who was always reading her

animal related books. When she moved to Price, she met someone that was already doing rehabilitation work. She became educated about how this profession works and how it doesn't work.

She made a decision that these animals deserved every chance they could get and she could be a part of that. She began working with others doing this work and started attending seminars for wildlife rehabilitators throughout the country. She became the first wildlife rehabilitator in Utah required to be tested by the state of Utah. Continuing education is very important to her.

"All wildlife matters and I work to instill this mindset in those that work for this organization".

I grew up in Southern Utah on a small ranch.

I was always taking care of some small animal and riding horses. All my life I have been in love with animals. I’ve had horses, parrots, hamsters, frogs, lizards and lots of cats and dogs. I also grew up hiking and camping in the

trails around our valley. After raising our family, a friend took me on my first bird rescue and I was hooked. I have spent the last two summers volunteering for several wildlife rehabilitators in Utah as well as the DNR. I’m an avid quilter too and into outdoor photography. This love of capturing the antics of the birds and wildlife I see in our world has kept me motivated. I enjoy transporting all of the many species of wildlife that have come my way and look forward to continuing to do so for a long time ahead.

Connie Waddell

In 2005 Connie started volunteering for Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation. Connie is also a Sub-permittee, under, Debbie Souza-Pappas's

Federal Permit.

Born, raised, and played in Carbon County, Utah where she knows a lot of the back roads, trails, and hidden spots. This has proven helpful on releases and locating injured birds.

“I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains, I've spent most of my life outdoors, I moved to Colorado in 1998, I enjoy the backcountry that the west has to offer. From being on top of a frozen ice climb to swimming in the Colorado River.

I learned about Second chance when I had the opportunity to help a golden eagle on the Colorado River near Moab Utah.  That was a day that I will not forget.

This day that I would never forget came back about six months later when I had the opportunity to be a part of the release of two golden eagles on the porcupine rim, including the eagle that I caught. I'm thankful to have met Debbie and Connie and all the great people at Second Chance.  “

Cindy Lund

I moved to Utah from Virginia in 1994, the same year Second Chance started caring for injured wildlife. When I lived in Salt Lake, I volunteered for CAWS (Community Animal Welfare Society)

and through CAWS, I met Debbie, transporting some wildlife to her facility.

My husband and I opened Castle Gate RV Park in Helper, UT in April of 2019. We value the wild areas we still have and the wild animals that live there. We were honored to release one of the lucky patients of Second Chance along the Price River. What a wonderful experience.

During my time on the board of Second Chance, I will work to support Debbie in her efforts through my ties with the community and by volunteering.
